The next meeting of the DocFilm Network will be held in the Screen Lounge on Tuesday 17th April.

Running between 6-9pm the DocFilm Network aims to support a network of local professionals and enthusiasts interested in supporting the regional documentary making sector. The idea is to establish quarterly networking opportunities at Phoenix Square that can support documentary filmmakers including equipment and funding. I'm pleased to announce this new network will be part of the Leicester Media Network being established as a collaboration between FD2D, Cuttlefish and Citizens Eye.

It is hoped a dedicated showcase of the 2013 DocFilm Festival can be filled with this content.

A major topic for discussion is the increased use of the studio on the basement level of Phoenix Square. This venue is under utilised and opportunities need to be explored for generating media content. Also if interested parties have already established media channels that need content, then it is hoped the network can support this.

An opportunity exists for Citizens Eye via its Newsnet partners to feed locally produced film content to the Community Channel and the new monthly show calledUK360. The Citizens Eye community media week back in November 2011 had a 4 minute feature in the 2nd programme.

The Community Channel is owned and run by the Media Trust. It is the UK's only digital television station dedicated to highlighting issues from the community, voluntary and charitable sector, both locally and internationally. The channel is broadcast on Virgin 233, 24/7 on Sky 539 and on Freeview 87 from 5am-8am. Community Channel is available on BT Vision and Sky Anytime's On Demand service.

An exciting project being launched as part of the cmc2012 project is the creation of Citizens Eye TV for local community news programming. We are seeking content providers for dedicated weekly and monthly slots in the schedule.

“My office isn't far from Zuccotti Park and when I heard it was being cleared I went down with my camera. I ended up filming for 18 hours until the Park was reopened at 6pm on November 15, 2011. During its war with the Tamil Tigers, the Sri Lankan government restricted fuel, medicines and food items reaching the north and east of Sri Lanka. Even newsprint essential for printing newspapers came under the bans. The embargoes reached their peak during the 1990s. Jaffna's newspapermen had to overcome scarcity to publish news of bombs and deaths.

11. Photography John Moore on Epic Libya Battles (duration 05:42)
Photographer John Moore is no stranger to combat. As a member of an Associated Press team in 2005, he shared a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography for coverage of the war in Iraq and he's done extended stints in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, South Africa, Mexico and Nicaragua and elsewhere in the last 20 years. Yet despite his relative comfort with being on the frontlines, Moore told the NewsHour from his hotel room in Cairo that his latest assignment -a six-week trip that took him to the uprisings in Egypt, Bahrain and Libya - might have been his most dangerous.

12. This Is Rubbish (duration 06:39)
Campaign doc on UK food waste action group 'This Is Rubbish'. 5,000 people were fed a free 3 course lunch in Trafalgar Square on 16th December. I covered the journey of that food from collection to digestion. All food above was recovered from the 'waste' department of a major UK food supplier.

13. Lulu’s Rescue (duration 12:57)
14,000 dogs die a day at our animal control facilities. This is a short documentary that exhibits the challenges facing dogs and the people that support them. It also focuses on the great work of Lulu's Rescue (lulusrescue.com/) who rescue dogs from North/South Carolina up to Pennsylvania, and follows their efforts to go beyond just rescue & create an all-important spay/neuter initiative.

Citizens Eye opened its year long Community Media Centre 2012 project today at the Phoenix Square Film & Digital Media Centre with an event between 12-2pm.

The DocFilm Festival in 3 days time is the first large event of the 20 events being organised throughout 2012. In amongst the celebrations today I received 2 more submissions to the festival so they just made the deadline.

I'll be spending time tomorrow completing the final schedule of short docfilms for Screen 3 and the Social DocCube so please check the site again tomorrow.

My idea behind DocFilm Festival is simple. To offer affordable access for communities to watch documentaries on the Worlds big issues, on the big screen. I screen the commercial films alongside local showcases and submissions from further afield to host an event worth visiting.

Through partnership working with organisations with budgets to provide training opportunities or marketing support, I've managed to obtain the majority of the funding needed to host the event.

'Creative Hub' Marketplace

On Saturday 21st January between 12 - 5pm the Phoenix Square Screen Lounge will open as a 'Creative Hub' operated by the Leicester Media Network.

This documentary themed marketplace will offer advice, services and products related to all areas of the documentary genre including film, television, photography and radio. Talk to doc filmmakers about your community groups project idea or find out how to break into the sector through volunteering.

Four pop-up portable screens are being provided by Ad Durnin of The Mighty Creatives to screen short docs as well as laptops for research. We are grateful for his support and feel confident the many short documentaries being provided by The Journals cultural olympiad project will be well received by the young people visiting the event. You will be able to register for The Journals project on the day.

The regional coordinators for somewhereto_EM will be showcasing the many success stories of local 16-25 year olds unlocking space across the city and provide the opportunity to discuss future opportunities.

A Creative Hub will be operating across all of our cmc2012 events to promote creativity and partnership working with sector practitioners. In June 2012 these will all come together to form the foundation for the next Creative Garden event being organised by the founding members of the Leicester Media Network - FD2D, Cuttlefish and Citizens Eye.

The Saturday Night 'Reportage Club'

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to a visit a bar that was dedicated to screening documentaries, showcasing the work of social documentary photographers and networking with others involved in multimedia sectors?

Well now you can. On Saturday 21st January the Phoenix Square Screen Lounge will be transformed into the Reportage Club. Over 20 short documentary submissions will be screened that reflect the scope of socially minded documentary film making across the world both indoors and in the outdoor cinema being operated by AD Durnin of TMC.

Local social documentary photographers Dipak Mistry and Andy Williams will be exhibiting their work digitally to provide an insight into the many communities they have worked with. The aim is to prove the genre of photo journalism is far from dead and encourage other photographers to try this style.

Citizens Eye, the community news agency will be embarking on a year long photo journalism experiment to capture daily lives throughout 2012. Through our involvement as a beacon hub in the Media Trust's Newsnet project we are developing links with citizen journalism projects across the UK and many countries across the globe. These links allow us to build on our knowledge for solving common problems and showcasing solutions to communities that share many of these daily challenges know matter your location in the world.

We shall be providing 'silent disco' style headsets for people to listen to the various documentaries and plan to operate 3 different channels throughout the 4 hours the Reportage Club is operating.

The Screen Lounge will become the Reportage Club between 6-10pm and is FREE to attend.

High Hopes Returns To Phoenix Square

The documentary festival starts on Friday 20th with an education day for local schools who have the opportunity to take part in animation & filmmaking workshops. The main film program starts on the Friday evening and continues across 7 screens throughout the weekend.

On Saturday night between 6-10pm the Reportage Club will be running in the Screen Lounge. A program of short documentaries will be playing on 3 screens and the ABC Alternative Bar Crawl will be joining us as their 'B' venue.

On Sunday between 2-4pm the 15th British Silent Film Festival are hosting a 2 hour matinee showcase in Screen 2. The Olympic themes of courage and determination will be reflected through the silent films of a bygone age.

A full program of talks, lectures and interactive Q&As will be running in the Screen Room (Screen 3) and the ETC Suites (for the 3 days rebranded as Sub Dept 45) in tribute to the early British Documentary Mob!

Dogwoof Popup Cinema have agreed to be partners along with the Media Trust's Community Channel and the Vimeo channel Socially Minded Documentaries.

I'm hoping to get their permission to show some of the documentaries at the festival in a showcase and also on the Saturday night during the Reportage Club (in the Screen Lounge).

The 2nd DocFilm Festival will take place in January 2012 at the Phoenix Square Film & Digital Media Centre in the heart of Leicester's Cultural Quarter.

The documentary festival starts on Friday 20th with an education day for local schools who have the opportunity to take part in workshops and find out how to capture their own 2012 experience. The main film program starts on the Friday evening and continues across 7 screens throughout the weekend.

There are 2 build up events taking place in other venues in Leicester. On Wednesday 18th Fabrika will play host to a screening between 6-8pm and on Thursday the Crumblin Cookie will host to a 6-8pm screening. The documentary films being screened will be announced in Early January 2012.

On Saturday night between 6-10pm the Reportage Club will be running in the Screen Lounge. A program of short documentaries will be playing on 3 screens and the ABC Alternative Bar Crawl will be joining us as their 'B' venue. Page One Screening Saturday 5th November

As a warm up to the 2nd DocFilm Festival the main event for the 3rd Community Media Week 2-8 November was a screening of Page One.

On Saturday 5th November 6.15pm the Dogwoof Ambassador screening of ‘Page One’ was hosted by John Coster.

Precis - With the Internet surpassing print as our main news source, and newspapers going bankrupt, Page One chronicles the media industry’s transformation and assesses the high stakes for democracy.

The 2nd DocFilm Festival takes place on 20-22 Jan 2012 organised by Citizens Eye and the ‘Festival Ticket’ goes on sale at the premiere of Page One.

Priced £15 the ticket includes access to all film screenings and workshops.

The main film will have a short 3 minute film screened before it as part of a somehwhereto_ ’show my film’ by a 16-25 year old local filmmaker Rosie Johnson.

The film deftly makes a beeline for the eye of the storm or, depending on how you look at it, the inner sanctum of the media, gaining unprecedented access to the New York Times newsroom for a year. At the media desk, a dialectical play-within-a-play transpires as writers like salty David Carr track print journalism’s metamorphosis even as their own paper struggles to stay vital and solvent, publishing material from WikiLeaks and encouraging writers to connect more directly with their audience. Meanwhile, rigorous journalism—including vibrant cross-cubicle debate and collaboration, tenacious jockeying for on-record quotes, and skilful page-one pitching—is alive and well. The resources, intellectual capital, stamina, and self-awareness mobilized when it counts attest there are no shortcuts when analyzing and reporting complex truths.
